Generative engine optimization cost in 2026, in one block:

  • GEO agency services, managed monthly: $1,500–$12,000 CAD per month, by scope
  • GEO tools and AI visibility platforms: $29–$500 USD per month
  • GEO consulting, hourly: $75–$200 USD per hour
  • Project-based GEO audits and one-off optimization work: $2,500–$10,000 USD
  • Enterprise AI visibility software seats: $449–$1,499 USD per month

Those GEO costs look low against the other GEO pricing guides on this query, and that is the most useful thing on this page: the price ranges dominating page one for generative engine optimization cost trace back to very few sources, and several GEO tool prices inside them no longer match what the vendors publish. Every figure below carries its source, verifiable in fifteen minutes.

We also answer the question those GEO pricing guides route around: is GEO a separate line item, or is it search engine optimization with a new label and a markup? We sell it: Renaissance SEO is a GEO agency as much as a search agency, so our answer costs us something. It is still the honest one.

How much does GEO cost in 2026?

The cost of GEO splits into four purchases: agency services, consulting, software, and internal time. Every GEO price below is traceable to a named source.

What you are buying GEO cost Source
Managed GEO strategy, local or single-location business $1,500–$2,500 CAD/month Renaissance SEO published retainers
Managed GEO strategy, multi-service or multiple locations $2,500–$5,000 CAD/month Renaissance SEO published retainers
Managed GEO strategy, e-commerce, SaaS, national scope $5,000–$12,000 CAD/month Renaissance SEO published retainers
Search retainers industry-wide, average $2,917 USD/month Ahrefs survey, 439 service providers
Search retainers, most common band $501–$1,000 USD/month (20.4%) Ahrefs survey, 439 service providers
Hourly consulting, most common band $75–$100 USD/hour (24%) Ahrefs survey, 439 service providers
Project-based work, most common band $2,501–$5,000 USD (21.2%) Ahrefs survey, 439 service providers
AI visibility tracking software, entry tier $29 USD/month Ahrefs and Otterly.AI pricing pages, August 2026
AI visibility tracking software, working tier $99–$249 USD/month Profound, Surfer SEO, Semrush, Ahrefs, August 2026
AI visibility tracking software, enterprise tier $449–$1,499 USD/month Semrush and Ahrefs pricing pages, August 2026

Two flags.

Currency. Every competing GEO cost guide quotes US dollars without saying so. Read as CAD from Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver, a “$1,500 minimum” is a different budget — roughly a third different at 2026 rates. Our GEO pricing is in Canadian dollars because that is what clients pay in.

The gap. Page one says small businesses pay $1,500–$5,000 per month for GEO services and enterprise businesses pay $25,000–$50,000 per month. Our top GEO retainer is $12,000 CAD, and the 439-provider survey puts the average monthly retainer at $2,917 USD. Discrepancies that size need explaining.

Where the $1,500–$50,000 GEO pricing range comes from

The three pages ranking above this one publish the same GEO costs, in the same order, with FAQ answers matching word for word. We fetched all three and compared line by line. What follows is observable, with no inference about intent:

  • The GEO retainer tiers are identical across three domains. $1,500–$5,000 small business, $5,000–$25,000 medium, $25,000–$50,000 enterprise. Not similar — identical.
  • The hourly and project-based GEO costs are identical. $50–$300 per hour, $5,000–$50,000 per project, on all three.
  • The section order is identical. Overall GEO cost range, agency services by business size, hourly and project-based costs, DIY tools and platforms, AI visibility software, GEO pricing factors, FAQ.
  • The FAQ answers are identical or near-identical. “GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It’s a digital marketing strategy…” opens the same answer on more than one domain.
  • One priced GEO tool is operated by one of the publishers. OmniSEO®, listed at $89–$899+ per month in all three software tables, is that company’s own AI visibility platform, hosted on its own website.
  • One guide closes by sending readers to another of the three. Its final line directs the reader to a different publisher on the list for GEO services.

None of that requires bad faith; syndication and content partnerships are ordinary. The consequence for a GEO buyer is not: page one for this query is one voice repeated three times. Cross-checking the $25,000–$50,000 enterprise price against a second result does not get you a second source.

The GEO tool prices show how old the research is

Two of the three pages cite Semrush, at different prices:

  • One page: Semrush, $117.33–$499 per month
  • Another: Semrush, $165.17–$455.67 per month

We opened Semrush’s pricing page on 4 August 2026:

Semrush plan Monthly billing Annual billing
SEO $139 $117.33/mo
Starter (SEO + AI Search) $199 $165.17/mo
Pro+ (SEO + AI Search) $299 $248.17/mo
Advanced (SEO + AI Search) $549 $455.67/mo

Both cited ranges are slices of one column. $117.33, $165.17 and $455.67 are annual-billing prices from that single table; the two pages picked different rows as floor and ceiling, and the $499 figure is not on the page at all. One price check read twice, from the annual column, with the monthly prices most buyers pay omitted.

Surfer SEO has a shorter shelf life still. All three pages quote $79 to $999+ per month. Surfer SEO’s published plans today are Discovery $49, Standard $99, Pro $182, Peace of Mind $299 and Enterprise $999, plus standalone AI Search Analytics at $158. There is no $79 tier: the floor everyone cites is a price no longer offered.

The competing GEO costs are not dishonest. They are unsourced, partly stale, and traceable to fewer origins than the SERP suggests — which matters for a decision starting at four figures a month.

GEO agency services: monthly retainers by business size

A GEO retainer is a labour budget. Read as hours, the pricing tiers stop being arbitrary. Our published GEO pricing, in CAD:

Business profile Monthly retainer Where the hours go
Local or single-location business $1,500–$2,500 CAD Machine-readability audit, 2–4 citable pages monthly, entity cleanup, measurement
Multi-service or multiple locations $2,500–$5,000 CAD The above at wider scope, plus brand coverage and competitor prompt tracking
E-commerce, SaaS, national scope $5,000–$12,000 CAD Template-level schema markup, category and feed optimization, sustained content output, multi-market tracking

Now the independent benchmark. The Ahrefs survey of 439 search service providers reports an average monthly retainer of $2,917 USD, with 42.8% charging $501–$2,000 per month and the most common band at $501–$1,000 (20.4% of respondents). By provider type: agencies $3,209/month, consultancies $3,250/month, freelancers $1,348.63/month.

That survey covers search work broadly rather than GEO specifically, and predates the current AI cycle. It is still the largest sampled dataset available, and it points where our GEO pricing points: the mass of the market sits between $1,000 and $5,000 per month. A $25,000–$50,000 enterprise retainer is not fictional — those GEO engagements exist — but presenting it as the enterprise norm distorts the budget of every reader who is not a Fortune 500.

Strategy scope drives the GEO cost, not the acronym. One city and eight service pages is local SEO scope, and the entry retainer covers it. Thousands of SKUs is e-commerce SEO scope, and that is what moves a GEO retainer up the ladder — the same variable that moves an SEO retainer up the ladder.

Hourly and project-based GEO costs

Per-hour and per-project GEO pricing is where published ranges are widest and sampled data is most useful. All three competing guides quote $50–$300 per hour and $5,000–$50,000 per project. The 439-provider survey reports what providers charge:

  • Hourly average: $111 USD. Most common band $75–$100 per hour (24%). 47% charge $75–$200 per hour.
  • By provider type: consultancies $171.18/hour, agencies $98.90/hour, freelancers $71.59/hour.
  • Project-based costs: most common band $2,501–$5,000 (21.2%). 60.6% charge $1,001 or more per project. Agencies average $9,507.84, consultancies $8,685.53, freelancers $2,348.63.

“$50–$300 per hour” is technically true and practically useless: it spans the whole market. The sampled distribution tells you a $250 hourly rate sits above the 47% band, and that you should ask what the premium buys.

Hourly GEO consulting suits a bounded question — a second opinion on a GEO proposal, scoping for an in-house team, a GEO audit diagnosing why a page that ranks earns no AI citations. That is SEO consulting for internal teams, priced accordingly. It is a poor delivery model for ongoing GEO work, because the ongoing work is the point: visibility in AI answers is defended monthly, not installed once.

GEO tools and platforms: software prices we checked ourselves

Ink illustration: two invoices side by side on a table under a lamp, compared line by line

Every GEO software price below was read off the vendor’s own pricing page on 4 August 2026.

Tool Entry Mid Top published Notes
Ahrefs Starter $29/mo Lite $129, Standard $249 Advanced $449, Enterprise $1,499/mo Brand Radar AI standalone from $199/mo; prompt packs $50, $100, $250/mo
Otterly.AI Lite $29/mo Standard $189/mo Premium $489/mo Enterprise custom pricing; 15% off annual
Surfer SEO Discovery $49/mo Standard $99, Pro $182 Peace of Mind $299, Enterprise $999/mo Annual billing; AI Search Analytics standalone $158/mo
Profound Starter $99/mo Growth $399/mo Enterprise custom pricing Billed yearly
Semrush SEO $139/mo Starter $199, Pro+ $299 Advanced $549/mo Annual saves up to 17%; AI search bundled, not an add-on

Three observations no other GEO cost guide makes.

Ahrefs appears in none of the three tool tables. Brand Radar is one of the larger AI visibility platforms in the category, with public pricing from $199/month standalone. A GEO tool comparison omitting it is not a survey of the category.

The software floor is $29 per month, not $50. Those guides state $50–$1,000+ per month for AI visibility tracking. Two vendors publish working tiers at $29.

Semrush no longer sells AI search tracking separately. AI visibility monitoring is bundled from the Starter plan up, so a GEO budget assuming a separate AI-tracking subscription on top of a Semrush seat is a year out of date.

A workable AI visibility stack for a small business is $29–$200 USD per month. A multi-market stack with rank data, crawl data and prompt tracking lands near $400–$800 per month. Above that you are buying enterprise seats and API access, a different purchase.

Is GEO billed separately from SEO, or is it SEO with a markup?

Here is our answer, with the work shown.

Most of what a GEO strategy does is technical and editorial search optimization. Our own GEO service runs three workstreams. Map them onto the discipline that already existed:

GEO workstream What the work is Where it lives
Machine readability Crawlability, render integrity, schema markup, site architecture Technical SEO
Citable content Answer-shaped pages, verifiable claims, extractable formatting, entity clarity SEO content
Brand coverage Third-party mentions on websites models quote Link building and digital PR

That is not a confession, it is the mechanism. Language models are grounded on the open web; what makes a page easy for a model to parse, quote and trust is largely what made it easy for a crawler to parse, rank and trust. When a vendor calls GEO a separate discipline needing a separate budget, ask which task on that GEO invoice would not appear on a competent technical SEO or content optimization invoice.

What is genuinely additional

Something is different, and the evidence on how far AI citations depend on rankings is mixed:

  • Originality.AI reports 52% of organic AI Overview citations come from top-10 results, and Google’s first page carries roughly a 38% chance of being cited.
  • Ahrefs, analysing 15,000 long-tail queries, found about 12% of URLs cited by AI assistants also rank in Google’s top 10 — Perplexity an outlier at 28.6%, other assistants near 8%.

Both hold, because they measure different surfaces. On Google’s AI Overviews, ranking does most of the work and your existing SEO investment carries you. On standalone assistants answering long-tail prompts, the overlap collapses and AI citations are driven by things ranking does not capture: how a claim is phrased, whether a figure is attributable, whether a brand is described consistently across third-party sources.

That delta is the honest case for a GEO line item. Not a separate discipline — a measurable extension, roughly the distance between 52% and 12%.

How GEO should appear on your invoice

Three defensible structures, and one that should prompt questions:

  1. Folded into an SEO retainer. Correct for most small businesses and mid-sized businesses, because the work overlaps.
  2. A named GEO workstream inside the retainer, with its own hours and reporting. Correct when you want the AI-surface cost and its return visible.
  3. A standalone GEO retainer. Correct when scope is genuinely additional: multi-market prompt tracking, dedicated content production, an outreach programme with real volume.
  4. A second full-price retainer stacked on an existing SEO retainer, covering the same technical and content tasks. Ask which tasks are duplicated — you may be paying twice for one crawl audit and one schema deployment.

If you already pay an agency for SEO, the question is not “how much does GEO cost.” It is “what changes in your scope of work, and by how many hours.” That question has a number attached.

What determines GEO pricing

Five variables move a GEO quote, in rough order of impact.

Strategy scope, in pages and markets. Forty pages in one city is a different engagement than four thousand SKUs in two languages. Page count and market count set the hours; the hours set the GEO cost. Largest driver, and it has nothing to do with AI.

Your technical starting point. A website rendering server-side, returning clean HTML, carrying valid schema markup needs a fraction of the machine-readability work of one hiding content behind client-side rendering. Measurable before anyone quotes, which is why technical audits precede a GEO price here rather than following it.

Content volume. Citable content is produced, not configured. Two researched pages a month and twelve pages a month are different labour budgets — the biggest cost swing inside any pricing tier.

Brand coverage ambition. Earning mentions on websites models quote requires outreach, the least automatable line on any GEO invoice. Providers pricing GEO services at the floor while promising brand coverage are generally not doing outreach.

Language and market complexity. For bilingual businesses every optimized asset exists twice. A Quebec business optimizing for both markets carries roughly 1.6–1.8 times the content load of a single-language competitor — not double, because technical work is shared, but well above one.

What in-house GEO costs

The competing guides answer this with “hiring is expensive, an agency partnership is cheaper.” That is an argument, not a calculation.

An in-house GEO strategy needs three things: someone who reads technical crawl data, someone who produces publishable content, and GEO tools. In the Canadian market, one generalist covering the first two is a salaried role. Add the software stack above — $200–$500 USD per month for anything multi-market — and the loaded monthly cost of one internal hire exceeds the top of our mid-tier GEO retainer before that person publishes a page.

In-house GEO wins twice: when volume keeps a specialist busy full time, and when subject matter is technical enough that outside writers cannot produce credible content. Below that volume the arithmetic favours an agency retainer. The hybrid that works: internal experts supply substance, an outside team handles content optimization, implementation and measurement.

What the GEO spend produces, measured

Ink illustration: a person measuring a length of rope with a folding ruler on a workbench

GEO pricing pages are easy to write. Here is what the money produced, from Search Console on anonymized client accounts.

A local marketing firm moved from under 10 organic clicks per month to over 300 per day in 12 months — 16.7k clicks on 987k impressions. A local contractor went from 5 clicks per week to roughly 80 per day: 7.21k clicks, 494k impressions, 1.5% CTR, average position 9.2. A three-month engagement took a client from 8 clicks per day to 90: 2.34k clicks, 64.5k impressions, 3.6% CTR, position 6.9.

The result that matters most for budgeting: 175.8k clicks held at the one-year mark. A result that decays is a result you buy twice, which makes it the most expensive GEO strategy on the menu.

We optimize our own websites too — one at roughly 6,000 organic clicks per month across about 180 bilingual pages — where methods get tested before a client pays for them. We publish a 90-day results guarantee in writing, a position that survives only if the measurement is real, and the case studies carry the full picture.

How to read a GEO quote in ten minutes

Four questions. Any GEO provider should answer all four without hedging.

1. Which line items would appear on a technical SEO or content invoice? You are not looking for zero, you are looking for a provider who can state the proportion. A claim that nothing overlaps means the proposal is not describing the work.

2. What is the hourly equivalent? Divide the monthly retainer by committed hours and compare against the sampled bands: $75–$100 per hour is most common, 47% of the market sits between $75 and $200. A GEO retainer implying $400 an hour needs a reason.

3. Which GEO tools are included, and what do they cost retail? Every price in the software table sits on a public pricing page, so you can check the margin. If the AI visibility platform is proprietary, ask what it does that a $199 standalone product does not.

4. What gets measured, and where can I see it? AI visibility numbers existing only inside a provider’s own dashboard are unverifiable by construction. Search Console, server logs and citation screenshots you can check yourself.

To answer the first three about your own website first, a technical audit produces the scope numbers every GEO quote is built from: page count, rendering situation, schema markup coverage. Our full range of SEO services is priced off exactly those inputs.

GEO cost FAQs

What is GEO?

GEO stands for generative engine optimization: optimizing a website so language models parse, quote and trust its content enough to cite it in AI answers on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews. In execution it is largely technical and editorial SEO work, extended with prompt-level measurement and brand coverage that ranking work does not require.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO optimizes for a ranked list of links; GEO optimizes for being quoted inside a generated answer. The work overlaps heavily — crawlability, schema markup, content quality and third-party mentions serve both. The measurable difference appears on standalone AI assistants, where Ahrefs found about 12% of cited URLs rank in Google’s top 10, against AI Overviews, where Originality.AI found 52% of organic citations come from top-10 results.

How much does GEO cost for a small business?

$1,500–$2,500 CAD per month as a managed GEO service at our published rates, or $29–$200 USD per month in GEO tools if you run the strategy in-house. The 439-provider survey puts the most common monthly retainer band at $501–$1,000 USD, where genuinely narrow single-location scope lands.

How much does GEO cost for multi-location businesses?

Higher, and the multiplier tracks page count more closely than location count. Two cities sharing one service catalogue add far less GEO cost than two cities with distinct catalogues, distinct inventory and two languages. For most Canadian businesses with multiple locations this is the $2,500–$5,000 CAD per month tier. Ask any agency to quote against your page inventory, not your location count.

Does GEO cost vary by industry?

Yes, driven by competition for the prompts you care about and by how much verification your claims require. Regulated industries — health, finance, legal — cost more because every citable claim needs sourcing and review, not because the technical optimization differs. Low-competition local trades sit at the bottom of the GEO pricing range.

Can I do GEO on my own?

Yes, and above a certain internal volume it is reasonable. You need someone who reads crawl and rendering data, someone who publishes credible content on schedule, and $29–$500 USD per month in GEO tools. Below roughly one full-time person’s worth of work, the loaded cost of that hire exceeds a mid-tier agency retainer.

Is it more cost-effective to manage GEO in-house or through an agency partnership?

For most businesses under enterprise scale, an agency retainer costs less than a salaried hire plus tools, and produces sooner because the methods already exist. In-house GEO wins at high volume or high subject-matter specificity. The hybrid — internal experts on substance, external team on implementation and measurement — is usually the cheapest structure that works.

Why do published GEO costs vary so widely?

Partly because strategy scope genuinely varies. Partly because a large share of published GEO pricing traces back to a small number of sources repeating one another, so a price range that looks corroborated across several websites may reflect a single estimate. Cross-check any GEO cost range against a sampled survey and against vendors’ own pricing pages.

Should GEO be a separate line item from my SEO retainer?

Only if the scope is genuinely additional. Multi-market prompt tracking, dedicated content production and an outreach programme are additional. A schema deployment and a crawl audit are not — if those appear on both invoices, you are paying twice. Ask for the hours, not the label.
